Optimist Dinghy Wind Indicator - 200mm Vane | Boat Maintenance Accessories

New Zealand-made wind indicator fits the plug in an Optimist mast top. Balanced vane with acetal bearing and UV-stabilised materials.

Choosing and using this product

Check the mast-top plug and mounting arrangement on the Optimist before ordering. The stated vane and support dimensions help confirm clearance around the top of the rig. A wind indicator needs space to turn freely without touching a halyard, fitting or other part of the mast assembly.

Install with the rig safely accessible and follow the mast and indicator fitting instructions. Check that the support is properly seated and that the bearing and vane are not distorted during fitting. Spin or move the vane gently to confirm unobstructed movement before raising the mast.

Use the vane as a visual reference for the wind at the masthead. Boat movement and sail position influence the apparent wind the sailor sees, so combine the indication with the sails and other sailing cues. Practise reading it in familiar conditions rather than relying on a new indicator for the first time during a crowded start or manoeuvre.

Keep the acetal bearing free from salt and dirt that could interfere with movement. After sailing, inspect for damage and follow suitable cleaning instructions rather than applying an unverified lubricant. Check that any cleaning residue does not leave the vane sticking or slow to respond in light air.

Protect the projecting vane and support during rig transport and storage. Avoid placing heavy equipment against them, and remove or secure the indicator where the mast handling procedure requires it. Before the next sail, recheck mounting security and free movement. If the vane becomes bent or damaged, assess its operation before using it again, as free rotation and balance are important to a useful indication.
