Chrome-plated brass gland with a compressible rubber grommet for sealing electrical cable through a deck or bulkhead.

  • Base diameter: 38mm
  • Countersunk fastening holes: 4mm
  • Cable diameter: 6mm

This gland provides a dedicated cable entry where an electrical lead passes through a deck or bulkhead. The rubber grommet compresses around the cable to form the seal, while the metal body provides a finished fitting at the penetration. It is a useful component when routing a cable from an external fitting into the protected interior of a boat.

Select the gland by the outside diameter of the complete cable sheath, rather than the conductor size printed on the cable. Measure the actual cable where it will pass through the grommet and check the available space for the base. Also consider the cable route on each side of the mounting surface so the lead can bend naturally without being forced sideways against the seal.

For general installation planning, choose a sound mounting surface with access underneath for routing and inspection. Check what is behind the proposed hole before drilling, including existing wiring and structural features. Use a fastening and bedding approach appropriate to the deck or bulkhead material and follow the fitting instructions. The cable jacket should be clean and undamaged where the rubber makes contact.

Allow enough cable for servicing nearby equipment while supporting the run so movement does not continually load the gland. Check the finished entry for a secure fit and inspect the surrounding surface after installation. During regular boat maintenance, examine the grommet, cable sheath and base attachment for movement or deterioration. If the cable is later replaced with a different size, reassess the gland selection rather than assuming the original sealing arrangement will remain suitable.

This 6mm version should be matched to the measured cable sheath. The common 38mm base and 4mm countersunk fastening holes help when comparing mounting positions, while the cable opening remains the critical difference between the available sizes.
