Choosing and using this product

The selected size is 25mm. Check that working width against the narrowest part of the area to be prepared or coated, including the clearance beside rails, mouldings and fittings. Lay out the equipment before opening the coating so fit can be checked without rushing.

Select brush width to suit the area you can work comfortably while keeping a wet edge. A narrower brush gives more control around small fittings, edges and corners; a wider brush covers open areas with fewer passes. Check the coating manufacturer's recommended application tool before selecting a brush for a particular primer, varnish or finish.

Prepare the surface before loading the brush. Remove loose material and contamination using the process specified for the coating, then allow the substrate to reach the required condition. Mask adjacent fittings where appropriate and organise the work so that handles, hinges and other obstructions do not interrupt a fresh coat.

Load the brush moderately and work the coating evenly rather than trying to cover too much area in one pass. Excess loading can leave runs around edges and fasteners. Use the coating's stated coverage, film build and recoating intervals as the guide; brush width does not determine the amount of paint a surface needs.

For work around deck hardware, keep separate control of the brush and any paint container so that neither can fall onto a finished surface. Inspect the brush before starting and remove loose bristles that could become caught in the coating. Test the application on an inconspicuous area when the final texture is important.

Follow the coating supplier's instructions for cleaning materials, ventilation and personal protection. If the brush is retained for another job, clean it before the coating cures and store it with the bristles protected from distortion. Where disposal is appropriate, deal with paint-contaminated tools according to the coating label and local waste requirements. Keeping different coatings and cleaning solvents separate helps avoid accidental contamination on the next application.
