A throttle-handle extension provides additional reach to a compatible outboard tiller, allowing the operator to choose a more practical position within a dinghy.

Choosing and using this product

Check the shape and diameter of the existing throttle handle before fitting the wing-nut collar. The extension should clamp securely without interfering with the throttle grip, stop switch or any other control. Motor compatibility depends on the actual handle arrangement, so do not select it from horsepower alone.

Trial the operating position with the engine stopped and the boat stationary. Make sure the chosen reach allows full steering travel without striking a seat, gunwale or passenger. Keep enough space to move the handle without twisting your wrist awkwardly. If using an adjustable model, secure the length adjustment before operating the motor.

Remain able to reach the motor stop control and use the engine’s required emergency-stop lanyard arrangement. Moving the seating position can alter trim, but an extension does not remove the need to balance passengers and equipment within the boat’s limits. Avoid standing where a sudden turn or change in speed could cause a fall.

Begin any handling check slowly in clear water and familiarise yourself with the extra leverage and reach. Recheck the collar after initial use and inspect it before each trip. Rinse salt from the aluminium and locking parts, dry the handle before storage and stop using the extension if it slips, binds or becomes damaged.

Check the arrangement with the motor turned fully in both directions and with the operator in the proposed seat. This simple stationary check can reveal interference that is difficult to address once under way.

Before carrying passengers, make sure everyone has space clear of the extended handle throughout a turn.
