The supplied self-adhesive pads are one of the mounting options to assess alongside the surface and installation instructions.
A marine compass provides a magnetic heading reference, so its position and compensation matter alongside the dial size. Choose a location where the intended reader can see the heading clearly, and follow the installation instructions to assess magnetic influences from nearby equipment. A convenient physical mounting point is only part of selecting a suitable position.
