Plan ventilation around the available opening
Ventilation fittings should be selected with the opening, airflow path and surrounding equipment in mind. Compare the stated overall size with the mounting area and check any cut-out or hose connection separately. For replacements, identify the existing arrangement before deciding whether a grille, cowl, ventilator or accessory is required.
Selection and fitting
Check clearance on both sides of the surface before fitting and follow the orientation requirements for the selected design. Keep the airflow path clear of stored items and surrounding trim. Where powered or solar operation is specified, follow the supplied instructions for that particular model. Clean accessible openings during routine maintenance and inspect fixings and seals where present. Do not assume that a ventilation fitting provides a watertight closure unless that function is expressly stated.
For an accurate fit, distinguish the cut-out measurement from the overall size. The cut-out describes the opening in the mounting surface, while the overall size describes the space occupied by the fitted frame or face. Compare both with your boat and check any stated depth, radius or thickness requirements before altering an existing opening.
For a refit, take measurements before removing the existing item and retain a note of its position and orientation. This gives you a useful reference when checking the replacement and helps keep related fittings aligned throughout the job.
